2 Democrats Ready
to Take on Republican Bonilla SAN ANTONIO (AP) August 16, 2006 Two Democrats say they'll challenge Republican Congressman Henry Bonilla in the newly redrawn 23rd congressional district. Former Congressman Ciro Rodriguez announced Monday he'll run against Bonilla. Rodriguez twice has lost in Democratic primaries to Congressman Henry Cuellar of Laredo in the 28th district. Rick Bolanos, who grew up in El Paso, was the Democratic nominee for the old 23rd District -- but has to start in the race anew because of the redrawn map. The U.S. Supreme Court ordered new boundaries after determining the sprawling district unconstitutionally diluted Hispanic voting strength. The changes ended up affecting five districts. The special elections for the five redrawn districts will happen the same day as the general election: Nov. 7. The special races will pit as many candidates as the state certifies against one another -- regardless of party. If no one gets more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters in each district will have a runoff. |
